  • With support from the Department of Energy and the California Energy Commission, we’re building long-duration energy storage demonstration systems to power two affordable housing communities and a Native American workforce development campus. But how do we ensure that these projects actually help the intended beneficiaries? How can we make the perspectives of the communities where we’re building these systems part and parcel of the design and execution of our projects? How do we evaluate our work, to ensure that we learn from our mistakes and replicate the successes? We’re looking for an experienced project manager with a background in a field that may include human-centered design, qualitative research, anthropology, or sociology who can help us with all of this.

We seek that rare candidate who straddles the divide between academia and what others call the real world, a critical thinker who knows how to get things done and may even have a gift for navigating red tape (there will be a lot of that). You’ll need to be talented at listening, observing, writing fieldnotes, gaining trust with project partners, and conducting qualitative interviews.

We’re open to remote work with some travel to sites or having a new face at our Signal Hill, California, office. The job can be full-time or, particularly as we ramp up, on a steady part-time basis. But we hope to find someone eager to work at this for at least three years. Continuity is important in building rapport with project partners. California residency or openness to relocating is required.

    Responsibilities:

    • Employ the principles of human-centered design and participatory research to enrich the community impact of our work.

    • Serve as a liaison between the host sites and other project partners, including ReJoule, the Department of Energy, workforce development agencies, and contractors, with the best interests of all at heart.

    • Design and prepare a series of reports for the DOE, turning what others might see as bureaucratic hurdles into a creative mission-driven collaboration with our host communities. These reports include:

    • A community benefits plan for each site

    • Environmental impact reports

    • A social characterization assessment

    • A stakeholder analysis

    • An account of harm reduction strategies

    • Coordinating with workforce development agencies

    • Strategies for benefiting American workers and furthering the goals of diversity, equity, and inclusion

    • An assessment of how our work advances the goals of the federal Justice 40 initiative.

    • Offer user-experience insights on our energy storage systems and battery diagnostic devices.

    • We’re open to remote work with some travel to sites around the US.

    Minimum qualifications:

    • Prior project management experience

    • Familiarity with renewable energy technologies

    • Ability to thrive in remote and hybrid work environments

    • Strong listening and interpersonal skills

    • Experience with qualitative interviewing

    • Familiarity with MS Office tools such as Word, Excel, Powerpoint, or equivalent tools such as Google Workspace

    • Bachelor’s degree

    Preferred qualifications

    • Prior work with Native American communities is a big plus, as is experience with labor unions.

    • A commitment to the possibilities of participatory research and genuine community engagement is indispensable.

    • A background in user-experience is valuable.

    • Formal training in project management

    • We encourage candidates with graduate level training to apply but will consider those with a BA, relevant experience, and a sharp mind.

Pay Range: $60,000 to $105,000 annually

About ReJoule
Today, there’s no simple way to know for certain whether the battery powering an electric vehicle is almost as good as new or on the brink of failure. ReJoule is here to shake up the world of battery diagnostics. Our technology makes it possible to know the battery’s state of health in 10 minutes or less whereas the industry standard (cycling) can take 10+ hours. It also offers another possibility: there are over 40 EVs on the road as of 2024. Which means that 40 million giant batteries will be decommissioned in the future. Then what? Our technology makes it possible to scale a fledgling industry known as repurposing. Batteries no longer suitable on the road can be given a second chance at life – as energy storage for renewables. With our rapid, affordable, and accurate diagnostics, we’re making it possible to maximize the value of every battery.
